A stalwart servant of the " Schweizer Nati," is Philippe Sylvain Senderos. Philippe was born to a Serbian mother and a Spanish father in the iconic Swiss city of Geneva on Feburary 14th 1985. With most footbalers he took up the art at a fairly young age surging through the ranks of his hometown club Servette FC Geneve 1890 in which he amassed 26 appearances and three goals in his first two years as a profesional.
In 2003 his skills alerted the attention of one Mr. Arsene Wegner and in the summer of 2003 the Swiss had no neutral thoughts on joining the Arsenal. Upon arrival young Senderos was watching the era of, "The Invincibles," he was hard press to get a starting birth yet a role on the bench with the likes of Kolo Toure', Tony Adams, Lauren and Sol Campbell. His fledgling years at the North London outfit was plague by injuries he played his first of 64 apperances for the Gunners to date against a lonely Manchester City side on the 27th of October 2004 in the League Cup. The turning point in Senderos' Arsenal career was the Awol of then skipper Sol Campbell in his later years at the club. With this Wenger had a void to fill Senderos seemed to be the man to partner Toure' in the heart of the Gunners defence but so far it seems the Swiss could not rise to the morning sun like so many. Wegner needed a dictator in the back something that the soft spoken Philippe is not, Gallas was sounded out across the bridge thus the temporary exile to Italy. Senderos is now on loan at AC Milan where he has just started 14 games out of a possible 38 and with Maldini, Bonera and Ambrosini around makes it tough going.
Internationally is where Philipppe earns his salt he with a multi national parents he was spoilt for choice but at the end if the day the allure of the Swiss Army was to much and he made is first apperance at youth level for the U-15s.As a natural he then became the captain of the U-17s. Senderos then found himself in the full national side making his debut in a 0-0 draw against the French in the historic Parc des Paris. He even captained the national side in the absence of Alexander Frei on a couple of occassions.
Reptiles' rule on the defender is one of confusion. In club colors he is nervy on the ball and can seen as a double edged sword but when draped in the international attire he is the pride of the Cantons. My fondest memory of Philippe is when he scored a header from a corner against Ukraine the result he busted his nose and still battled on. He is quick, strong and has a lot of heart but in contrast his composure is one to be left desired in the air a threat to all goals including his own. To Philippe Senderos you are a good player with potential but every one has potential don't die with just having that at 24 time is runnning out as a youngster.
This is a fun fact young Sendy coming from Switzerland a multicultural nation speaks six differents languages not satisfied with the national languages of German, French and Italian he has also added English, Portuguese and Spanish to his resume'. He even thought a certain Francesc Fabregas to turn his "Si" into, "Oui" and then into, "Yes," teaching him English and French. If the football does not work out there is always a job at the UN.
